February 12,
2005 ~ 9:30pm
The Rex Jazz and Blues Bar - 194 Queen Street
West, Toronto, ON
New York's Dave Binney on alto saxophone, "...a strikingly original composer/leader/conceptualist....**** ½" (Down Beat Magazine), will be joining bassist/composer Michael Herring's Vertigo in Toronto. This one-time concert at The Rex (February 12, 2005) is a rare opportunity to see Dave Binney in Toronto. The group will be going into the studio to document this exciting music the days immediately following.
Vertigo plays Michael Herring's original music, focusing on rhythmic grooves, open improvising and mixing the influences of the New York Downtown Scene, including artists such as Chris Potter, Dave Holland, Scott Colley, Drew Gress, with classic sixties sextet sounds like Booker Little and Wayne Shorter.
Vertigo is comprised of some of Toronto's most exciting young jazz musicians: Quinsin Nachoff (tenor saxophone and clarinets), William Carn (trombone), Don Scott (guitar), Jesse Baird (drums), and Michael Herring (double bass).
"[Dave Binney] is an impassioned saxophonist, capable of creating dense, multidirectional music filled with vital, invigorating conflict" (Stuart Broomer, Toronto Life Magazine, Feb. 2005).
The Rex Hotel & Jazz and Blues Bar, one of Toronto's premier jazz venues, is located at 194 Queen Street West, west of University Ave. (416-598-2475).

Michael Herring is a double-bassist, composer and arranger
based in Toronto. His focus is on jazz, although he performs in a variety of
genres, including folk, reggae and performance art. He has a strong sound and
musical personality, and thrives in open and improvised settings.
As well as leading his own sextet, Vertigo, he has the privilege of performing regularly with many groups including The Nick Ali Trio (modern jazz), the Juno-nominated Jason Wilson and Tabarruk (reggae, with jazz influences), and in the collective Bokker Buckle Band (avant-garde jazz/performance art). He has shared the stage with such great musicians as Bernie Senensky, Kirk MacDonald, Stich Wynston, Norman Marshall-Villeneuve, Mike Murley and Percy Sledge. Besides playing and touring in Canada, he has toured with his own band in Korea, and with various ensembles in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean.

Acclaimed as a considerable and highly individual compositional talent, saxophonist Dave Binney is one of the most prolific young jazz musicians on the scene today. Winning praise from critics and colleagues alike, Dave was recently singled out by Jazz Times as one of a handful of "young players who have created an alternative jazz scene...all of whom are playing adventurous, original music."
His projects as a leader include such contemporary jazz greats as Chris Potter, Brian Blade, Uri Caine, Jim Black, Craig Taborn, Wayne Krantz, and Scott Colley. In addition to Dave’s extensive work as a leader, he is a sought-after sideman, appearing on record with Medeski, Martin & Wood and Uri Caine's Mahler Project. Dave has also appeared on stage with Aretha Franklin at Carnegie Hall, Jim Hall, Maceo Parker, and with such prestigious groups as the big bands of Gil Evans and Maria Schneider. Dave was also a co-founder of the hard-edged quintet Lost Tribe and the open-form collective quartet Lan Xang. With these groups and on his own, he has recorded a dozen albums as leader or co-leader.
