PROJECTS

Some of the projects Michael is a part of as a sideman:

Jason Wilson and Tabarruk
Reggae with an artful touch of jazz, amongst other influences.

The core band includes: Jason Wilson (lead vocals, keyboards, guitar, aux percussion), Don Scott (guitar, backing vocals), Michael Herring (bass, backing vocals), Clarke Williams (drums, shouts), and the band features a regular assortment of special guests and added members.

"...it may well be that to chart the future of reggae music you have to look to Canada and check Jason Wilson and Tabarruk."
Lee Marshall - ReggaePlus Radio [May 2004]

Mr Pointy

Don Scott (guitar and effects), Joe Sorbara (percussion), Michael Herring (bass) have formed a brand new band (after Rob Mosher's exit from town and therefore the Bokker Buckle Band) bringing together their shared adolescent love of grunge (Pearl Jam and Nirvana, Michael still wears plaid shirts) along with explorations in avant-garde composition and performance. Also see Joe's Mr Pointy Page.

Don Scott Trio

Featuring Michael Herring (bass) and Jesse Baird (drums), the Don Scott Trio combines a modern jazz concept with elements of free improvisation and groove-based playing. Don's compositions include sections of highly composed material mixed with purely improvised sections, organically slipping between the two. This dynamic trio involves subtle interplay between the three voices and a collective ear for shape and form. The band also plays some contemporary jazz compositions by the likes of Ben Monder, Dave Binney, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Dave Douglas, Paul Motian, and Mark Helias.

"the idea is now to look at what other's have done with large ensembles of improvisers in the hope that eventually i may stumble upon a voice of my own in this medium. as well as cobra, we have looked at christian wolff's burdocks, some music by ron samworth, and some of my own work which deals with the idea of structured improvisation using composed bits of music and a set of rules and extra-musical communication such as hand signals, etc"
